Getting hacked off

18 April 2008. Tagged computers, rant

This is a message to all the jerks of the world that think that is a good idea to hack and spam other people’s sites. You know what it is people like you that make the internet crap and not a fun place to be on. I am really sick of the muppets out there that think that spam really works. I am really an sick of checking my inbox and finding nothing spam, that I would never click on ever. How many people out there really would trust an email from a stranger telling them stock advice. Who really buys pills to make the manhood bigger anyways. I am also sick the bots that think that it is clever to write pointless comments on my blogs. It is not a big problem with this site, but hate those people that turn the internet is a rubbish tip

Keeping myself busy

22 February 2008. Tagged computers, design, personal, rant, series, uni, works

Every time I write a blog on here, I always feel guilty for not having the time to write more on this blog. In truth I have too much going on in my life at the moment to keep a truly up to date blog. I also find that lots of the things I want to blog about feel a bit pointless. There are so many blogs out there, so what is the point of rewriting stuff that someone has already written like so many others. As I am keeping myself so busy, what have I been doing?

Well of course, I have had university work to do; I am working on my second year of my degree at the moment so I have had lots to do there. I created a couple of pieces of work that I was extremely proud of. For one of modules, I had to write a Java program which was a massive undertaking. The Java program was a simple piece of network mapping software. It worked out amazing; I can’t say I have been more proud of anything, work wise, than this. Check out a screenshot of it in action on my Flickr account.

Ring Ring

20 December 2007. Tagged facebook, random, rant, uni

I have been very unlucky lately and have lost three phones in a row. Thinking back over the whole thing, I worked out how important to have a form of communition with the world. Unlike like a couple of years ago, with so many people in my life and living between two different area codes, I found it is very important to have a way to contact me where ever the hell I am.

The thing that interested me the most is the very small amount of numbers that I both recieve and send texts to. I had tonnes of numbers on my phone, friends of old and random people I didn’t really know. From all this, I worked out that I only really needed four numbers.

  • Mother(of course)
  • Girlfriend
  • Best friend on Course
  • Sholder to cry on

But being without a phone most useful tool that I have used instead of having a phone is the social networking web site Facebook. With Facebook I have the ablity to have a portal to my community of friends and family where I am. To me at least, it has nearly replaced my phone as the way I interact with my friends. Now I have a new phone, I really need Facebook everywhere I go. A while back I installed the Mobile app. It sends me SMS messages when I get a wall post or message meaning I have both the phone to make calls, texts and now facebook in one device.

With new devices like the Iphone coming out, it is funny to think that I am never happier than with a really old crap phone in my pocket. It means that when I lose this one I don’t really care because it costs me nothing. It also shows how much I really care about new features in phones. I couldn’t give a crap if there is a the best camera in the world in my phone now, as long as I can make calls I am happy. So stick that in your pile and smoke it O2!

Blogging

15 July 2007. Tagged personal, rant, site

This blog has been running for nearly a year and I thought that I would talk about blogging itself. I really enjoy writting this blogs in general and the act interests me so much, I thought that I would be a little Self-reference. I must admit, I really do not write enough and keep this page as updated as I should but I do try. It really is a matter of what on earth should I write about? There are lots of sites out there that report news like the BBC, so I am not going to try and be one of those. I don’t like sites that rereport news and normally there is a just a hyperlink to the page and no useful new information. If you really want to find cool news stories, than why not have a look at the social linking sites, like Digg or del.icio.us.

I have been known to do a bit of rereporting but I don’t think that is the real focus of this site. The point of this site is that is doesn’t really have a point. I can write what I feel interests me and share that with the rest of the world. But reading this blog you get a chance to look in my head and see the kinds of things that interest me. It makes this blog very personal to and you get insight into my mindset by reading it. Having said that it is very personal, I don’t really write about my life. There are lots about blogs out there about people’s lives, their girlfriends and parents that are getting on people nurves. For the most part, all of these are rubbish and are completely boring to read. I find it hard to believe that anyone but the people who these blogs are write about would find Joe Blogs and his cats at all interesting. I try and write about accessable topics that interest the world at large. What the problem lots of us weblogger have is, how do you keep the quality level to a high standard. The question you have to got ask yourself before sitting down in front of your computer is this, “Why I am blogging this?”. If it is for a good reason, to write something of use, that would help the world, like a blog about you dealing with a problem, then fine. But if I have to read another blog post about the Iphone, I think I am going to go mad.

University life Part 2

5 July 2007. Tagged facebook, personal, rant, stuff, uni, unilife

facebook8.pngThis is the second part of series of posts about life at university and my thought on my first year. The first post in the series just had some general thoughts I had coming straight back from Portsmouth. This post is entitled “faceboking“.

As a student at university, prepare yourself to spend hours of your life on this web site. I have heard facebook discribed as, “Like crack”. If you walk around a computer room in any university campus, you will see many screen with this site on it. I know that I personally have spend hours, tagging myself in photos, search for friends and reading other people walls. But many do not understand this phenomenon. Why is facebook so good?

The site seems to understand that people want to know what their friends are doing and share information easily. The site was orignally designed for students and even now when it is open, it still has that at it’s core. It understand that MySpace is different market, that facebook users don’t care about what look of their profile and that not everyone in the world should be able to see your profile. So other people on your network can see your profile. Your network can be a workplace, region, high school or college. For example, I am member of London and Uni. Portsmouth ‘10. Only people that live in london or are currently going to Portsmouth. This is very useful and cuts down on spam friendship requests.

Another Jonathan Harris

14 June 2007. Tagged design, personal, rant

When looking at the web stats for this site, a looked at the list of search engine terms that brings visiters to the site from search engines. Interestingly enough the search terms that got the most people to the site was best jokes in the world. But when looking at the results I saw something else that interested me. The third result on the term terms was “jonathan harris” web design. That search is finding the post when I discussed my web design Portfolio. I run the search to see what came up and it turns out that there is another web designer out their called Jonathan Harris.

This is not the first time I have seen people on the internet with my name. For example the famous actor Jonathan Harris who was the star of the 1950s tv show Lost in Space. Their is also a British camera company called jonathanharris.co.uk. But this person with the same name seems to really both me. There is another guy out there that has my name and does exactly the same as me, making web sites. So I decided to read all of this guys site which is called number 27 and I must admit it a bit weird. It starts off with an odd personal statement about the Universe, which I personally think it rubish. Then it talks about some of the projects this guy has worked on. Some of this guys projects really put me to shame. I really like the Yahoo! Netrospective which is a selection the top 100 moments of the web from 1995 to 2005.

Well, all I can say is that my Portfolio looks much more interesting than Number27. Looking his bio, is was born in 1979, making him about 28 years old and has finished a degree in Computer science. So all this can mean for me that I have a bright future as I have lots more years to build up my design skills. So if you were searching for a different Jonathan Harris, free feel to contact me and give me ago, I am cheaper!

Bad advice

16 April 2007. Tagged personal, random, rant

In my short little life, I have been even lots of advice. Some of it has been very useful, but lots of advice that I have been given has been pretty much useless. So when thinking back about the advice that I have been given the most, is interestingly the worst advice ever. What is this useless saying that I have heard some much

Buck up

It is as simple as that, buck up. For the life of me, I can not think of a time in my life when this advice has done any good, what so ever. I find it hard to believe that it is even said. To my understanding, all the saying, buck up means, it, don’t be sad anymore. What are you ordering me not to be said? Yes, when I am in a bad mood, being told not be to is pretty much the last thing that I want to hear. I don’t think so.

If you have ever really truly been depressed and been in a really bad mood, that saying doesn’t not help anything. If you really want the person to be happier, give them a reason to cheer up. Take them down to the pub, for a nice meal or if you are a girl, good shopping.

Saying Buck up, to me, means that you don’t really understand what state the person’s emotionally state is and have no idea what they going through. People that think that you can change your mood back to happy when you are truly depressed are fools of the highest order.

Right, got that out of my system.
