Unbored

One of the biggest problems in life is getting your first big brake, more so than ever in these troubled times. Spending months without a job, takes it out of you. I have many friends in the same place as me, so we decided to do something for ourselves. I teamed up with Jack Clarkson, an English Lit student and friend I meet at university.  What followed was months of discussion, fighting and designing with the result being something that, exceeded both of our expectations.

Today I am very proud to announce our love child, and it is called Unbored. Unbored is a reviews, articles and videos site, written by geeks, for geeks. What is great about the site, it is by young people who write about what they love. The writers say what they really think of thinks and poke fun at things that need poking fun at. This is where you can find bright new writers find there voice. What is best about this project, is that we did it all ourselves, from the ground up. I love the site, I know you will to.

Best answer phone message ever

Posted on:

This is the message that the Maroochydore High School, Queensland, Australia, staff voted unanimously to record on their school telephone answering machine. This is the actual answering machine message for the school.

This came about because they implemented a policy requiring students and parents to be responsible for their children’s absences and missing homework. The school and teachers are being sued by parents who want their children’s failing grades changed to passing grades – even though those children were absent 15-30 times during the semester and did not complete enough school work to pass their classes. I got a job

Posted on:

After the many, many months of searching, I am finally gainfully employed. It has been an extremely hard road not having a job, meaning I didn’t have any focus in life. The whole process gave me a new understanding of myself. I start work on Monday and I am working for a company called M W Kellogg (not the breakfast cereal people).

Culture of Linking

BBC News Article

As this blog has been running for a couple of years now, I think one of the most important parts of my job as a blogger is to use hyperlinks well. Personally, I have really embraced the concept of hyperlinking within my posts, as I think it is important, but others don’t seem to understand the true usefulness of hyperlinking.

Hyperlinking is an issue for many websites, as most refuse to do it. The BBC news website for example does not embed any links to external sources. The reason for this is two fold. Firstly when a writer puts a hyperlink within a post to an external site, their content is then link to the content of a third party’s site, which they do not control. This lack of control is a problem as if the third party, changes the content on the linked page to something different or inappropriate, the author may become libel. Secondly, if the linked site decides to take the post/page down, change their URL structure or the entire site goes down, this would therefore brake the hyperlink. Hyperlinking on a BBC’s news site would be complex, as it would add overhead, as a team would have to be created to check each linked site is still up and content on the linked page is the same. Then is there really a place for hyperlinking on news sites and the web in general?

Thou Shalt always Kill

What may appear as a bit of a weird title to this post, let me explain. It is the name of a both the song and video by a group called, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip. The song in question is something that one of my facebook friends posted, that I thought was so amazing, I  listen to it on repeat six times. I think that this video speaks directly to the youtube generation, telling us not to be lazy and greedy. If anything, it is just very funny. Give it a listen.
