Twitter, some more thoughts

Posted on:

I have been thinking a lot of my last post over the last couple of weeks. Twitter has been getting more and more press in lately, with protesters of the G20 using Twitter to organise demonstrations. It seems like many of my readers were maden by my post and the comments section firing up with your views. Many of you had some very good points, one of the most interesting comments I had I got on twitter itself and I thought I would share it.

RJay45@thespacedmonkey Well I have written problems I’ve had at work and got technical help come back through before. Why are you still tweeting?

I can completely understand his point, if you had a simple idea to share or question to ask, it is a very useful tool. But I don’t think that is what twitter is. Many of the post I see on twitter are not useful one, for all twitter is good for, many of the post are personal updates, such as Kevin Rose‘s wonderful;

Pants status: off

I think that many people believe that twitter will be the next big thing, but I don’t think this will even happen. The difference between twitter and facebook is simple, you be on facebook, you don’t have to create any content. You don’t have to upload anything, you can be tagged in pictures by others and simple enjoy contacting friends. Also twitter has no BUILT-IN was of posting images, which I think is a gaint omission of any social network. Many of the people that do twitter, do not think about what they are saying, just post without thought about what they are doing.

To want to twitter, you want to be a blogger and as the interest has shown not everyone want to be a blogger. So why am I talking about twitter still? I have found some amazing links from it. At the moment, this is what I am doing on twitter.

So I have some questions for those reading this post.

  1. What do you use twitter for?
  2. What is the future of twitter?
  3. Do you think that twitter will ever over take facebook?

    Stop comparing Twitter with Facebook, they are completley different. Twitter is good, Facebook is Good. Facebook has loads of shitty adverts, quizes, gifts, bollucks, and lame people talking shit. Twitter has less apps and is less usefull. Neither are perfect, both have good aspects. But they are different, Twitter is for people, and you don’t have to be friends to follow, Facebook is much more for friends and talking and networking with friends. You wouldnt add stephen fry as a friend on facebook unless you are sad and even then he probally wouldn’t accept, but twitter everyone can follow everyone and its a lot less personal and more relaxed. Twtter is for fun, this is what you are missing. It isn’t trying to be something you NEED. Where as Facebook is, and is much more usefull for keeping contact with people and photos etc and everyone thinks you HAVE to have it and in most cases I think people should have it, and use it more. Twiiter is facebooks cooler little brother that is more fun and less serious.

  2. I don’t compare twitter to facebook as I think they are similar services, indeed I know they are not, but it is because the media and the rest of the world seems to. I think that people that do twitter loose sight of the rest of the world and think it is going to change everything, where as I think it is more of a fad an anything.

    As for adding friends, that is what RJay45 was trying to say, is that he added his friends and he gets updates from them.

    1) Procrastinating, seeing whats going on in the world, fun.

    2) More people using it, more friends updating on it, some interesting finds. The best bit about twitter is thats its simple.

    3) NO, Facebook is an all around social netoworking package. Twitter is a little website for fun. More people will always use facebook than twitter, because less people use the interent enough to appreciate twitter. Lots of people who use Facebook don’t get facebook still, and lots of them only use it once a month becasue they are so behind with the times and don’t get why it’s useful. So no Twitter will not amount the numbers that facebook has.

    I think twitter and facebook should be used exclusively but find ways to integrate. what twitter is good at getting business involved and pitching on the forums.
